Who is now reading this?

Maybe one is now reading this who knows some wrong-doing of my past life,
Or maybe a stranger is reading this who has secretly loved me,
Or maybe one who meets all my grand assumptions and egotisms with derision,
Or maybe one who is puzzled at me.
As if I were not puzzled at myself!
Or as if I never deride myself! (O conscience-struck! O self-convicted!)
Or as if I do not secretly love strangers! (O tenderly, a long time, and never avow it;)
Or as if I did not see, perfectly well, interior in myself, the stuff of wrong-doing,
Or as if it could cease transpiring from me until it must cease.
~ Walt Whitman

I've discovered that I like Whitman. I thought this poem was especially suited to an online blog. After all, who is reading this?

And oh, for the time being my blog will not allow anonymous comments. So whoever wishes to comment, please get a blogspot id. Thanks

Its just me

  • I wonder why I always get sleepy people sitting next to me on the bus. I don't remember having declared my shoulder to be a public pillow to rest their sleepy heads on! I had to nudge one idiot very hard today as he kept leaning on my shoulder. One of these days I'm just gonna get up abruptly and see if those sleepy bums fall over.
  • Sometimes in a conversation I tend to go blank once in a while. It has nothing to do with the other person. I just switch off for a moment or two. This exasperates me.

Handshake or a cheek kiss?

Where a hand shake used to do, lately I've noticed many people are inclined to go in for half hugs, full embraces or even kisses. This forced familiarity have caused me on more than one occasion to end a conversation with a same bye bye wave which conveniently serves as a barrier to discourage people from moving into more intimate contact. This isn't to say that I am cold or unfeeling. I can over eagerly hug my friends but how can you end business meetings with cheek kisses or say goodbye to people you've just met with hugs?

People hem and haw when its time to say goodbye or cross to the other side of the street to avoid greeting that friend of a friend they met only once. And if that's not enough they do that dance where neither person knows which way to lean in for that awkward half-hug, cheek kiss thing.

My take is why cheek kiss when you can do with a handshake. What's your thought?

My talking appliances

Ever imagined if your appliances talk in your home. How would you react? I for one, would be so nervous, particularly since I wouldn’t know what they are saying behind my back. I mean imagine a washer making rude remarks about the yellow stains on my dress? Or the coke I spilled on my skirt? And does the dryer laugh at the washers joke?

Think of it: refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, oven, microwave, air conditioner, light switches, TV, stereos, dvd player, computer– everything in your home linked together wirelessly and your appliances chatting all the time

Refrigerator: Good morning Oven
Oven: Good morning Refrigerator. Did you have a good night?
Refrigerator: Well, it was quiet until that Dewdy girl came downstairs for ice cream around midnight
Clock (interrupts): It was 11:40 p.m actually and 12 seconds
Refrigerator: Oh whatever, she came down for a cherry vanilla flavor but she couldn’t eat just enough. She had me working for half hour.
Microwave: Personally I think shes putting on some weight. Some of those Microwave dinner she eats are simply loaded with fat. And you wouldn’t believe how much salt they have.
Scale: Well, just between you and me, she’s gained 5 lbs in the last 3 months!
Treadmill: Im not surprised, Dewdy hasn’t stepped on me in weeks.
Lighted Mirror: I know, she asks me all the time, do I look slim?
Printer & Computer(in liaison): She's been working us up researching and printing some greasy recipes.
They all murmer their argument.
Lighted Mirror (continues): Maybe I should just lower my wattage, you know, dim the light way down so she doesn’t look all that bad?
Dishwasher: I like that idea. Lets vote for it.

No matter what all these appliances may think, the computer geeks assure me that I will still be the boss, the decision maker. So I suppose I will have to learn to order my appliances around firmly. And I'll have to make sure they don’t get into petty squabbles, misunderstand each other, get scared during power cuts etc just like little kids.

And someday I know I’ll get back to my office from a late lunch and my assistant will say “Your Mr. Coffee called while you were out. He asked if you could pick up some French roast decaf on your way home?”

Good morning world

There is something amazingly fresh about gentle Spring mornings. The lazy looking sun mirrors my lethargy of getting up for the grind as it spreads its bright arms around. The beauty of the sparkly dew on the greeneries shows the miracle nature made after the depressing winter. I feel elated about life; its calmness and tranquility.

As I gather around the porch, my discerning senses hear the chirping of astir birds blend into the tinkling of the wind chimes.

Creame doughnuts with a hot cup of cinnamon tea sets my palate moving. Welcome a wonderful morning!

Thought of this lovely day:
Today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and tomorrow a vision of hope.

Monday musing

Leaving a message on someone's answering machine is better than them picking up the phone. It's nothing personal. It's just that you can say whatever you want without being interrupted. You don't have to wait your turn to speak. You don't need a response nor do you want one. Right now it's what you've gotta say that's important. I usually leave my boss a message at an unusual AM hour whenever I have to pretentiously call sick :P

If you leave a message on someone's answering machine that isn't understood, the other party can keep rewinding until they get it. This way its their time that's wasted and not yours. Then they do the same thing back. You play phone tag until you're both on the same page.

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta"

Those are the first few lines of the famous and controversial Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I'm almost half way through it. Its a story of a young 12 year old nymphet, and her forty something year old seducer. Though technically its a brilliant comic-serious read, I am left with a bitter taste in my mouth. I have always been broad-minded about sexual inclinations of people. I have known some homosexual people and I have never treated them differently. Never felt differently about them. But when it comes to people who are sexually attracted to children I am left speechless. How how how can any one be a pedophile? Child marriages were an accepted part of the society once upon a time. But then so was Sati! What really triggers off these sexual senses? Is there any psychological explanation behind pedophiles? Would they have been different in different circumstances? How can anything ever explain wanting to have sex with a child?

And the music plays on...

This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. It draws fancy imageries and its been on my mind for a while. I dedicate this song to all you wonderful people out there.

Listen here

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dreams that you dream of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dream of, dreams really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star, wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops is where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dreams that you dare to, oh why, oh why can't I?
Well I see trees of green and red roses too,
I'll watch then bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white and the brightness of day
I like the dark and I think to myself, what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people passing by
I see friends shaking hands saying, How do you do?
They're really saying, I, I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more than we'll know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Someday I'll wish upon a star, wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops is where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dreams that you dare to, oh why, oh why can't I?
